The delirious sight of Meryl Streep leading a river of multigenerational women singing "Dancing Queen" is one of the high points of Mamma Mia!, the musical built around the songs of the hugely popular pop group ABBA. The plot sets in motion when Sophie (Amanda Seyfried, Mean Girls), daughter of Donna (Streep), sends a letter to three men, inviting them to her wedding--because after reading her mother's diary, she suspects that one of them is her father. When all three arrive at the Greek island where Donna runs a hotel, Donna flips out and finds that passions she thought she'd laid aside are coming back to life. But let's face it, the plot is not the point--it's a ridiculous contrivance that provides an excuse for the characters to sing the massive hits of ABBA. Regrettably, first-time film director Phyllida Lloyd (who directed the original stage production) has drawn over-the-top performances from everyone involved, even Streep; every production number hammers its exuberance into your eyeballs. Which is too bad, because Mamma Mia! is a rarity: A middle-aged love story. The kids start things off, but the story is really about Streep and the three guys (former James Bond Pierce Brosnan, former Mr. Darcy Colin Firth, and Swedish star Stellan Skarsgard), as well as Donna's best friends (Christine Baranski, best known from the TV show Cybill, and Julie Walters, Calendar Girls). It's a romantic comedy aimed at the people who were around when all these songs were new, and that's an age group Hollywood largely ignores. For that alone, Mamma Mia! deserves to find an audience. --Bret Fetzer

A genuine feel good, sunshine movie.
Great fun, great cast and yeah, it has it's flaws and it could be better but if you sneer you have no love in your heart and no life in your soul.
Just smile and go with the flow :o)

This was such a fun movie! I have seen it at the theater 3 times and will definitely buy the movie to enjoy over and over again! The storyline is fun, the singers and dancers are terrific, and the music is... well it's ABBA! How could you go wrong?! The cast is wonderfully talented and even Pierce Brosnan, who isn't the finest singer, has a good time (plus he's very nice to look at). I highly recommend this movie for anyone who has fun!

Light of Earendil (Middle Earth)
This movie would have been better if it hadn't had Perce Brosnan singing in it. His singing is horrendous ruining a great ABBA song: SOS
Well, apart from that, this movie is great fun... the only thing I didn't like is that here in Mexico it took a long time to be released. On top of that it was DUBBED IN SPANISH!!! Dubbing a movie into spanish is a big mistake since most of us mexicans like to watch it in its original audio. And dubbing a musical is the worst mistake, they talk in spanish and suddenly sing in english, it's terrible. Who came up with this, I don't know. I had to enter a VIP movie theater cause that is the only place showing it in English. CINEPOLIS should be ashamed.

Esta pelicula hubera sido mejor si no hubiera tenido a Pierce Brosnan cantando. Su canto fue horrendo arruinando una gran cancion de ABBA: SOS
Bueno, aparte de eso, esta pelicula fue muy divertida lo unico que no me gusto fue que aqui en Mexico se tardo mucho en ser estrenada. Encima de eso estaba DOBLADA AL ESPANOL!!! Eso es un gran error ya que a la mayoria de nosotros los mexicanos nos gusta ver las peliculas con su idioma y audio original. Y doblar un musical es el peor de los errores, hablan en espanol y de repente cantan en ingles. A quien se le ocurrio esto, no lo se.
Encima de todo en CINEPOLIS solo mostraban la version subtitulada en las salas VIP, tuve que entrar ahi haciendome gastar mas. CINEPOLIS deberia avergonzarse.

I saw this film for the third time and, yes, I love it. Perhaps because I am such a huge fan of "ABBA" since I was, well... never mind. I still enjoy "Muriel's Wedding" for the same reason, but "Mamma Mia!" has a different flavor. It's just so spirited, romantic and, of course, musical. I don't get many times to see a fun movie from beginning to the end and this is one of those. You can sing along, but make sure you do not disturb your neighbor. Maybe that is another good reason for me to include it in my DVD collection, besides the fact that seeing Meryl Streep already makes it worthwhile. She is one of my favorite actresses singing my favourite band. And her performance in "The Winner Takes It All" adds a very special touch to the beautiful song. What else do I need? It's funny to see Pierce Brosnan trying an "SOS" and it wasn't bad at all. I guess they had a lot of fun making the movie because it comes through so well. The film will make you cry, laugh, sing and fly. And I mean it literally because the shots of the Greek Islands are so beautiful that will probably make you decide for a Greek vacation next time you go away. And when you're there, while enjoying cocktails, remember to play some music from one of the greatest bands ever; "ABBA": yesterday, today and tomorrow.
