Spock (Leonard Nimoy) waxes spooky as Death personified in this video retelling of Ray Bradbury's classic Halloween adventure. A Hanna-Barbera animated presentation, The Halloween Tree tells the story of four close friends who must face their greatest fears as they travel through time to save their dear comrade, Pip. It's Halloween night, Pip's favorite holiday, and the friends are baffled to spot his spirit running through the woods when they've just seen his body hauled off in an ambulance. Mustering their courage, they follow the spirit and meet Moundshroud (Nimoy), the mysterious black-caped proprietor of a haunted house. Moundshroud challenges them each to gain a deeper understanding of the origins of this ghostly holiday as he leads them on an educational journey through faraway places and time periods. From Egyptian sarcophaguses to Mexican graveyards, the children learn the legends behind Halloween and the importance they place on their friendship with Pip. Imaginative, not too scary, well-acted, and nicely drawn, this hour-long treat will appeal to little spooks ages 5 and older. A short Yogi Bear "classic" involving a witch vacationing in Jellystone Park opens the show; parents not into reminiscing might wish to fast-forward past this dated time-waster. --Liane Thomas

5 out of 5 stars Fun way to teach the multicultural aspects of Halloween   October 31, 2008
cagey (Irvine, CA USA)
This is one of my favorite cartoons to show to middle schoolers. We study Medieval Europe and this is the perfect way to talk about how all these different cultures contribute to Halloween as we now practice it. Ray Bradbury is my favorite author, so we read some of the book and the movie is narrated by him so you can use this to teach similes and metaphors. Great learning tool! But I wish it was on DVD!

5 out of 5 stars Trick or Treat   October 31, 2008
Susan Gagliano (Willoughby Hills, OH)
This story is absolutely wonderful for children who are old enough to sit still through a 1 hour movie. I remember watching this on television as a child and I never forgot it. It explains the origins, sights and symbols of Halloween in a fun and thrilling way.

5 out of 5 stars very pleased   January 8, 2008

5 out of 5 stars Ray Bradbury's Movie "The Halloween Tree"   October 13, 2007
K. Bialkowski (Denver, CO USA)
This early 1990s movie is an absolute gem!! Not well known, but it should be. It is animated, and Sci-Fi guru Ray Bradbury does the narration, which is exceptional. Leonard (Mr. Spock) Nimoy is the voice of evil Moundshroud. At first glance the movie is about spooky Halloween doings, underneath, however, lies a story of friendship, love and loyalty. A close-knit group of best friends wait for their "leader", Pip, to join them for Halloween trict-or-treating. When he doesn't show, they get worried and go to his darkened house, where they find a note explaining that he has been taken to the hospital. On their way to find Pip, the group runs into Pip's spirit and follows it to a ghostly house inhabited by evil Moundshroud, a Dracula-type character. There they see the Halloween tree, loaded with the jack-o-lantern souls of thousands of others, with Pip being one of them. His spirit grabs his "soul" and leads them all, including Moundshroud, on a chase through centuries of cultures that explain the meaning of Halloween. I won't tell you the end, so you will have to see it for yourself! Terrific colorful animation, with an intriquing story line. Geared for kids, but adults will like it, also. This needs to be on CD! All I could find was the VHS, which I was happy to find because my 12-year-old copy is shot! Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Halloween Tree   October 10, 2007
A. Gif For You (Phila, Pa)
My children and I enjoy the Halloween tree ever fall, this is one of the ways we celebrate the Halloween season and will continue to do so for many years. Ray Bradbury was a wonderful writer, my only wish is that there could be sequel.
