Smart, Award-Winning Fun
Apples to Apples has won numerous awards including "Party Game of the Year" by Games magazine and "Mensa Select" by Mensa International. And for good reason: it involves quick thinking, humor, and strategy. For teens, the game teaches them to think about how different things can be compared to one another and how analogies are formed. One of our criticisms is that although the game states that it is designed for ages 12 and older, many of the subjects are clearly for older teens.

Hilarious Comparisons and Analogies
The name of the game is a play on the phrase "apples to oranges," and the game is about making comparisons between different things. General game play is as follows: players are dealt red cards which have a noun printed on them, and the judge (a different player in each turn) draws a green card on which an adjective is printed and places it for all players to see. Each player then chooses a red card they are holding that they think best describes the green card. The judge then decides which adjective she likes best.

The fun is in the variety of unexpected comparisons people make, sometimes apt, funny, creative, or simply absurd. For example: people might match "Awkward" with "Oil Spills," "My First Kiss," "Dandruff," and "Gold Chains. " Or: "Painful" with "High School Reunions" and "Regis Philben. " Strategy comes into play since, because each player takes turns being the judge, you begin to pick up on the preferences of each player and tailor your choices accordingly.

Players can also try variations on the basic game play. For example, instead of choosing the most apt comparison, players might try choosing the red card that is least like the green one. These variations keep the game fresh and interesting every time.

Conversation Kick Starter
Part of the fun is in standing up for your choices. For instance, you might discuss why you think "Regis Philben" is painful, or segue into a discussion of the embarrassing situations you got into on your first day of school, or your first kiss. Apples to Apples excels as an ice breaker and promotes a good amount of social interaction, as many conversations will be kick started thanks to these little cards.

More Players, More Fun
Although the box states that the game is playable with just four players, we found that the game is a lot more fun when there are at least five or six players. This increases both the frequency of funny answers and also requires players to refine their strategy a little more. Once we got going, hours passed, and it was only the lateness of the hour that reminded some of us that we had to go home.

This Party Box set comes with more than 1,000 cards total, and will entertain for a long time. Additional expansion sets are available to further increase the variety of word combinations.

What's in the Box
756 Red Apple Cards, 252 Green Apple Cards, card tray, quick play rules.

5 out of 5 stars Fun!   January 6, 2009

This game is a great family and party game. It makes you think logically and creatively at the same time, and encourages you to verbally defend your thought processing. It forces you to try to think about how others are thinking which leads to a lot of laughing.

4 out of 5 stars No right or wrong, but fun anyway   December 31, 2008

When my family picked out this game to play on Thanksgiving I thought we would either have a great time or end up bickering over why one persons answer was more right than the other person (leading to a holiday meltdown).....Luckily we did not experience the later. The game is pretty simple, it reminds me of balderdash but there is not right answer. Instead the card will give you an adjective and you have to pick from the 5 or 6 cards you are holding of nouns which best fits with that adjective. The person who read the adjective then reads through all the submissions and chooses the one that they think most closely resembles what they feel is the best tie to the adjective. This is where it gets a little tricky, since their is no "right" answer I was worried that some people may be offended that their answer wasn't chosen over the other one. Instead everyone learned to tailor their picks to the judge (which rotated every turn) and had a good chuckle over most of the submissions. I would definitely recommend the game for everyone.

1 out of 5 stars I HATE THIS GAME!!!!!!!! HATE IT.... DID I SAY HATE!!!!   December 31, 2008

This is the most mamsy-pamsy stupid game on the planet. Not only is it no fun but it can drive you mad because the outcome is determined by the person reviewing the answers. The answers are in no way reflective of the stupid one word description that is given and the outcome is so stupid because the best answer is never chosen. Rather the reviewer chooses the answer that best suits his/her fancy which makes any logic for the answers chosen fly out the window like a stale fart that blows in the wind. I have friends that like this game and when I have to play it I cringe because I am trapped in a living hell of a stupid game that has no correct answers. Burn this game and the factory that makes it. Kill the makers... who are probably a bunch of tree hugging peace freaks that were losers all their life so in order for them to feel good they had to invent a game that makes no sense and doesn't offend anyone. Give me a real game with winners and losers at least I know I am in control of my destiny! I would have rated this game a 1/4 star but 1 star is the lowest I can rate it. If you enjoy this game there is something seriously wrong with you, or your just plain OLD!

5 out of 5 stars Crazy Fun!!!   December 30, 2008

This game is quite possibly the best party game ever invented. It's very simple and easy to learn. It reminds me a bit of Mad Libs, because you are dealing with nouns and adjectives. You just simply pick the best noun in your hand that fits the adjective for that round and the dealer decides which noun was the best out of all. But, just because you think that your noun fits best, doesn't mean the dealer agrees! In this way you play to the dealer. The better you know your friends the better chance you have at winning. You wouldn't believe the answers people come up with!! One time I played and the adjective was "chunky" and my friend threw down "cleaning the bathroom"! LOL! Its great fun and you won't stop laughing until the game is over. Also, the game is relatively quick, 20-40 minutes depending on how many players you have, and you can feel free to have a few glasses of wine with out it inhibiting your game play. A great investment!

5 out of 5 stars Fun in a box   December 28, 2008

This game is a family favorite. It's a different game every time and is just super entertaining. Cards have a pretty decent variety and come with blank cards so you can also make up your own. It's hilarious to see what people come up with and how they respond to the various green cards played. ANYONE can play this game it is just super simple. But watch out - it's very addicting!
