Great for the money! July 20, 2010 Skip Thomsen (Hilo, HI United States) This little tool is exactly what I expected. It's a nice, heavy-based stand, an adequate magnifying glass and it is reasonably flexible as to holding positions. The price dictated that the various adjustments would be less than precision, therefor somewhat difficult to lock into any particular position. Once locked in, however, they do the job. The clips are standard electronics alligator clips and the coarse-tooth configuration makes it difficult to grasp tiny items, but again, with some patience, it can be done.
So for a tool that I will use only occasionally, for the price it is a bargain. If I were to need it on a daily basis, I would have paid over $100 for the professional version.
awesome magnifier July 3, 2010 Kevin L. Riedl (Portland, OR USA) I highly recommend this to anybody who wants a magnifying stand at a small price. it is a lot smaller than I had expected, but it works great
the only bad thing I can say about it is that it has a small magnifying glass, so any big circuit boards you may be working on may be a pain to work on
Useful... but not without flaws June 24, 2010 ygd (San Diego, CA USA) I'll start by saying that I've never used the magnifying glass on this third hand tool. I don't use this guy much unless I need to tension or hold wires for soldering. It's useful, but it still has some major flaws.
For one thing, it's base (or at least the base on my unit) is not completely flat, so it rocks around on my table. Also, I find the little alligator clips at the end keep coming off, although I can easily remedy this by pushing them back in and tightening them. The whole arm is also a little stiffer than I would like it to be, and not very flexible either. And of course, I found a similar model to this (made by Velleman) at my local Fry's Electronics for $5.
decent, but consider a jeweler's loupe. June 9, 2010 R. Newnham (Eugene, OR) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have one of these, yet I find I do not use it very often. It is a pretty good piece of hobby equipment for the cost, certainly, and the clips are good for holding and stabilizing a project. My preferred hobby is painting 30mm miniatures, and I find that I get better mileage out of a (pretty cheap) jeweler's loupe that I can clip to my glasses. Alternartely, I also find myself using an adjustable lighted magnifier, the type that is mounted on an arm and connects to an edge of a table. Simply put, I rarely use my X-tra Hands.
looks sad when NOT holding something for you. April 18, 2010 S. A. Brown (NC, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a good set of xtra hands.
The base has enough weight that it wont tip over while you are working on things.
The magnifying glass makes things larger.
